Helpful Tips

Overtime I have learned that sometimes age-old or innovative tips work far better than conventional methods or products. Here is my  attempt to share some of these with you, these are the ones that I have used (and still experimenting with some). I would try to create different categories so that its easy to browse. And I would be glad to incorporate any tips that you may know of.
Before I go on here is a disclaimer: these tips may not work for everyone, please exercise your own discretion before adopting any of these.

Health/Beauty

  • Cough/Cold
    • If you have a sour throat, we all know that salt-water gargles can help if you start as soon as you feel it coming, but it turns out that BLACK TEA GARGLES work much better than salt-water gargles.
    • For a seasonal cough (stubborn one), take half tablespoon of "Sitopladi  Churan" (can be found this in Indian grocery stores in herbal medicine aisle) and mix in 4-5 drops of ginger juice (I just crush some fresh ginger and squeeze out its juice) and enough honey to make a thick paste. Take this once a day and not more more than 5 days in a row (not recommended for kids under 6). My mother used this recipe so many times on us and it worked every single time.
    • Another remedy for cough is to take half tablespoon of ginger powder (sonth) and mix in enough honey to make a thick paste. Take it once a day and see if you feel better.
  • Cold remedy for babies
    • Take half cup mustard oil, put 8-10 garlic pods and a tsp of ajwain and heat it until garlic pods get brown. Strain the oil and cool it to lukewarm and massage gently on baby's chest, back palm and soles.
  • Hair care (I don't have great hair but I am trying to get there using as much natural products as I can :)
    • Massage you scalp with a warm oil mix: one teaspoon each of coconut oil, ghee (clarified butter) and avocado oil one a week around 2-3 hours before washing it off. And it really makes a difference if you use a sulfate free shampoo (and don't wash your hair more than twice a week if you stay indoors and don't do a lot of sweating activity).
    • Another hair mask that make your hair really soft and shiny can be made by making a paste out of one fourth to half ripe avocado and an egg. Apply it on your hair from root to tip and wash it off after 1-2 hours.

  • Going chemical free and cheap :)
    • Home made body scrub: Will post it in a week, currently experimenting!
